A dead captain's translated log preserves the Demeter crew's progressive disappearance and the pale presence hidden among the cargo.
The Demeter's Log begins as the ordinary record of a voyage from Varna to Whitby, then becomes an exact chronology of mounting terror. It records crossed sailors, empty watches, a tall and ghastly pale man, the mate's futile knife-stroke and suicide, and the captain's choice to bind himself to the wheel with a crucifix.
Found on the dead captain and translated by the Russian consul's clerk, the log is reproduced in the Dailygraph. It turns a miraculous shipwreck into documented evidence that something hunted the crew while hiding amid the Boxes of Earth.
A ship's log-book kept aboard the Demeter, supplemented by the captain's final note and translated from Russian after the wreck; its binding is not described.
The log converts the lost crew's otherwise unknowable fate into preserved testimony and links the strange arrival to the cargo from Varna.
