Transylvania

the Count's country

A remote Carpathian borderland of layered peoples, war, superstition, and unmapped mountains, where Jonathan passes from western certainty into Dracula's domain.

Story so far

Jonathan Harker researches Transylvania before entering its easternmost Carpathian country, where the borders of Transylvania, Moldavia, and Bukovina meet. Maps cannot locate Castle Dracula, and Jonathan records Saxon, Wallachian, Magyar, Szekely, and Slovak populations alongside traditions of witches, werewolves, vampires, and buried treasure.

As he travels beyond Bistritz through the Borgo Pass, ordinary rail and coach routes give way to mountain roads, wolves, blue flames, and a ruined castle. The region's feared superstitions begin behaving like observed facts.

Appearance

A wild Carpathian borderland of forested hills, jagged snowy peaks, deep gorges, rivers, old towns, mountain passes, scattered farms, fruit blossom, and immense distances.

Role

Transylvania is Dracula's homeland and the cultural and geographic threshold where Jonathan's modern legal journey enters an older supernatural order.

Relationships

Jonathan Harker — Jonathan Harker crosses the region while documenting its peoples and initially treating its warnings as anthropological curiosities.
