Donita Grace

Donita

A crawler at stop 24 whose last words were a warning: millions of them, worse than the grubs, don't come.

Story so far

Nobody in Carl's party had met her. She appears once, in the chat, in the middle of the party's own small victory over a hatching monster: "Holy shit. Holy shit. Guys. Don't go to stop 24. They're everywhere. Millions of them. Worse than the grubs. Don't…" The message cut off there, and the system appended its cold clarifying footnote — this message is from a deceased crawler.

Her timing made her death informative in a way she never intended. Carl had just watched one stage three monster burst into thousands of Krakaren Crotch Dumpling on his own stretch of track, and had spent hours listening to reports that the stage threes were racing down the lines toward Station 24 and then camping outside it rather than entering. Donita Grace was inside, and her final broadcast told everyone what several hundred of those monsters hatching at once looks like. The comparison to the grubs was hers; Carl's own mind went to the fire ants instead.

Her message did what one dying crawler's message can do. Chat exploded with people demanding to know what was happening, and stop 24 — until then the one stairwell station with stairs and no ghouls, and therefore the one Carl had always been most afraid of — went from a suspicion to a confirmed slaughterhouse.

Appearance

Never seen. She exists as a name in a chat window and a system notice that its author is dead.

Role

A crawler at station 24 whose dying message confirmed the floor's endgame: the stage three monsters hatch, and they hatch in millions.

Relationships

Station 24 — She died inside it, warning everyone else away from the one stairwell station that had looked safe.
Krakaren Crotch Dumpling — The 'millions of them' she described are the swarm Carl had just met a few thousand of.
Carl — A stranger whose death, arriving mid-experiment, told him what he had been trying to work out all day.
