United Nations

UN · Earth government · Earth

The United Nations changes leaders as its battered fleet returns with access to worlds that may end Earth's defining scarcity.

Story so far

The UN expedition survives the Slow Zone disaster and turns home alongside Martian and outer-planet ships, carrying fewer sailors and far greater news than it brought outward. Families awaiting the fleet will receive flags, medals, and condolences for losses no institution can replace. They will also learn that the Ring now opens onto more than a thousand systems and habitable worlds.

Before the fleet arrives, Earth undergoes a leadership transition: Esteban loses the secretary-generalship to Nancy Gao. Hector Cortez sees Chrisjen Avasarala's hidden influence in the result. Gao inherits a government built around managing diminishing resources just as the gate network offers the possibility of new land, new wealth, and new conflict on a scale its institutions have never faced.

Appearance

The United Nations is represented by Earth's homebound military ships, formal offices, flags, medals, and the immense bureaucracy that governs a crowded planet under resource constraints.

Role

The UN returns from the Ring diminished militarily but facing a political and economic horizon that may transform every premise of Earth government.
