Europa

Jupiter's low-gravity moon hosts Anna's fragile congregation and family, but cannot remain a temporary home for her growing daughter.

Story so far

Europa is a settled moon of Jupiter where Anna Volovodov serves a small, fragile congregation and Nicholas Trubachev works surface construction in a heavy vacuum suit. Its communities occupy tunnels under contracted policing arrangements, and its low gravity makes the threatening stride of an outer-planet laborer look almost comic to Earth-born Anna.

Anna and Namono “Nono” Volovodov came here dreaming of ministry in distant places, but their two-year posting now threatens to define Nami's body permanently. The toddler receives drugs to strengthen her bones, yet continued growth in low gravity will give her an outer-planet frame and may close Earth to her forever. Nono therefore decides to take Nami to Moscow while Anna leaves for The Ring.

Appearance

Europa's settlement consists of low-gravity tunnels, surface works reached in heavy vacuum suits, modest apartments, and contracted civic services. Imported food is precious, including the first small apple harvests recovering from Ganymede's crisis.

Role

Europa is Anna's pastoral home and the low-gravity environment whose biological consequences force her family to separate and return to Earth.

Relationships

Anna Volovodov — Anna Volovodov ministers to a vulnerable congregation here and has treated the posting as temporary longer than her family can safely allow.
Nami — Its low gravity requires Nami to take developmental drugs and will soon permanently shape her skeleton.
St. John's United — St. John's United anchors Anna's small religious community within the moon's tunnels.
