Story so far
Unable to fit Sam's lifting mech into the elevator shaft, Bull lets the surviving rebels put his paralyzed body in an EVA suit. He sends Naomi Nagata, Juarez, and Cass toward command, remains behind in the trapped elevator, and greets Casimir with two spine-cracker grenades on their shortest fuses. The blast ends the pursuit and kills Bull; his sacrifice gives the others the time they need to help stop Ashford's plan.
Under restored gravity, the battered crew of the Behemoth gathers for a memorial. Michio Pa, her face bandaged, speaks Carlos Baca's name alongside Samantha Rosenberg and the ship's other dead before their ashes are committed to the void. Fred Johnson later tells Holden that he demanded too much from Bull, and that losing his old friend is a debt for which apology is no remedy.
Appearance
In life Bull was a fit, nut-brown Earther over forty with coarse graying hair, stubble, and a hard-used face. Paralysis left him dependent on Sam's modified lifting mech for movement.
Role
Bull dies as the resistance's final rearguard, turning his immobility into the delay that lets the surviving assault force reach command. The memorial and Fred's message establish the magnitude of his loss to both the Behemoth and the OPA.
Relationships
Fred Johnson — Fred Johnson was Bull's oldest friend and the commander who repeatedly asked him to endure impossible assignments; Fred mourns that he asked too much one final time.
Michio Pa — Bull fought beside Michio Pa for control of the Behemoth, and Pa formally names him among the ship's honored dead.
Samantha Rosenberg — Samantha Rosenberg built the lifting mech that restored his mobility, and they are remembered together after dying in the same struggle.
Naomi Nagata — Bull sends Naomi Nagata onward from the elevator because her engineering knowledge and connection to Holden can still change the battle.
Casimir — Bull kills Casimir and the pursuing armored loyalists with the grenades that also end his own life.
